The Right Rev. Eugene Taylor Sutton
Bishop of Maryland
The Rt. Rev. Eugene Taylor Sutton, bishop of the Diocese of Maryland, frequently leads retreats and conferences about spirituality and prayer. Formerly the Canon Pastor of Washington National Cathedral and Director of the Center for Prayer and Pilgrimage, he has also served as a college chaplain, parish priest and professor in homiletics and liturgy at Vanderbilt University Divinity School. The author of several articles about spiritual practices and preaching, Bishop Sutton is a contributor to the book The Diversity of Centering Prayer.
The Right Rev. Chilton R. Knudsen, DD
Assistant Bishop of Maryland
The Rt. Rev. Chilton Knudsen was born into a Navy family and grew up all over the world. First trained as a biologist, she received an M. Div. from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary with high honors in 1980. Ordained deacon in 1980, priest in 1981 and bishop in 1998, Bishop Knudsen served as Bishop of Maine for ten years, then as a missionary in Haiti. She has said “Yes” to God’s call to serve as an Assistant Bishop; in Kentucky, New York and Long Island, and now in Maryland.
In the Diocese of Maryland, Bishop Knudsen will share with Bishop Sutton in Parish Visitations, Ordinations and Celebrations of New Ministry, and will have special responsibility overseeing the ordination process, the diaconate and ministry in small congregations, both urban and rural. Bishop Knudsen loves golf, concerts, reading and water aerobics. She and her husband Mike, a retired computer scientist, will reside in Catonsville at Charlestown.
